When most people think about the digestive system, they think about digesting food.
In reality, your digestive tract is responsible for much more. It serves as one of the body's largest immune organs, protects you from harmful bacteria and toxins, absorbs nutrients essential for life, and plays a critical role in regulating inflammation throughout the body.
When the digestive tract becomes damaged, a condition commonly referred to as intestinal permeability or "leaky gut", the consequences extend far beyond bloating or stomach discomfort.

Your Intestinal Lining Is the Foundation of Your Health
The intestinal lining is one of the most remarkable tissues in the human body.
Thankfully, it repairs itself by turning over cells and creating new ones approximately every four days. By comparison, your red blood cells live for about 120 days.
Because the intestinal lining is constantly repairing itself, it requires an ongoing supply of nutrients and a healthy environment to rebuild properly.
Its primary job is to:
Absorb nutrients from food
Keep harmful bacteria contained inside the digestive tract
Prevent toxins from entering the bloodstream
Regulate communication with your immune system
When this lining becomes inflamed or damaged, the protective barrier weakens.
What Is Leaky Gut?
The cells lining the intestines are connected by structures called tight junctions.
Think of these as tiny gatekeepers.
Under normal circumstances, they allow nutrients to pass into the bloodstream while keeping bacteria, toxins, partially digested food particles, and other unwanted substances safely inside the digestive tract.
When inflammation damages these tight junctions, they become less selective.
This allows substances to "leak" through the intestinal barrier into the bloodstream, where the immune system recognizes them as foreign invaders.
